Game Development at Tangaroa College
This was an amazing workshop that we ran that covered 3D and 2D game making. As usual, the students took to it like naturals. It was clear by about an hour in that certain kids gravitated towards technical disciplines such as game design and programming, whereas others really seemed to enjoy the more creative disciplines such as 3D modelling, and 2D drawing.
The real joy of teaching at a lower decile school, is that we get to show the kids that they have some real talent in technology, and that pure academia isn’t the be-all and end-all when it comes to their careers. In fact, many of the students had great natural talent, and potentially could be very successful in future if they can apply themselves.
I brought an intern, Alex, from GridAKL with me to help tutor the students in 3D modelling. He did a great job, and it really helped his confidence as well. It was great for the students to see a slightly older student that they could relate to.
